The Braille Literacy program empowers individuals to maintain their love of reading and expand their access to written information. At Valley Center for the Blind, we encourage clients to take on the challenging yet deeply rewarding process of learning braille. Braille is a tactile writing system in which letters and symbols are formed through patterns of raised dots read by touch.

Instruction begins with Grade 1 Braille, a simplified format ideal for labeling and reading basic text. As students build confidence, they progress to Grade 2 Braille, which introduces contractions and advanced rules that allow for more efficient reading and writing. This progression ensures that each learner develops practical, realworld literacy skills at a pace that matches their goals and abilities.

Braille literacy is a powerful tool for independence. Whether labeling household items, taking notes, reading personal documents, or accessing books, braille opens doors to greater autonomy and confidence for individuals experiencing vision loss. As with all VCB programs, training is personalized, supportive, and designed to meet the unique needs of every participant.
